<dc:subject>expectations</dc:subject>

I am nearing the end of my first year at university, and my mum asked me the other day if university has been what I anticipated. I was shocked when I struggled to come up with an answer for her.

I think that I have simply seamlessly moved from high school to university, so much so that I cannot remember what my expectations were for university. I recall being apprehensive about starting and possibly a bit overwhelmed when I arrived for my first few weeks of classes, but I have no recollection of what I expected to happen.

Maybe my lack of expectations was a good thing, or maybe it was bad, but I feel that I have enjoyed myself and have learnt a lot in the 8 different subjects I have had this year, including e-Portfolio.

e-Portfolio especially has shown me that I am not as computer literate as I thought (in regards to Apple Macintosh computers anyway!) and has opened my eyes to new ideas and new ways of sharing thoughts and information, rather than other sites such as myspace and windows live spaces which are much more personal.

I have had some experience with blogging before, which has often been personal and emotional and has resulted in some not so beneficial outcomes. This e-Portfolio, on the other hand, I am determined to keep reflective, in regards to my academic, working and travelling life, and basically reflect on experiences rather than expressing my raw emotions to the world for common knowledge and comment.

In regards to my other subjects this year, subjects such as Managing People and Organisations (MPO), Management Knowledge (MK) and Human Resource Development in Organisations (HRD) have taught me about the way businesses operate, and without these subjects I would not have been able to find out the information that I did. For example, MK has shown me, through two group case studies, that the culture of an organisation can have a drastic effect on the way they share and maintain their knowledge. I would not have known this if I had not been required to research these case studies, and they proved to be an amazing insight into the corporate world and has highlighted the fact that businesses operate differently in the public and private sectors.

Adult Learning and Work (ALW) has taught me much about how the learning of adults differs greatly from that of children, which in turn impacts the way in which training in organisations has to be approached.

Language, Culture and Communication (LCC) has taught me that different sources approach the same subject in vastly different ways, so therefore we need to read each source critically and ensure that we do not take the information from any one source as fact.

Analysing Organisational Learning Needs (AOLN) has shown me a practical insight into a possible career that can come out of this degree, which has been very beneficial to me, as it has shown me where I can be in 5 years time. The group work project that has made up the majority of the assessment in this subject has been very interesting and was a lot of fun to coordinate!

And finally, Work and People (W&P) has taught me a lot about the world of work, and what I can expect as a graduate when I enter the corporate world. It has opened my eyes to a lot of issues that I will probably look into more as the years in my degree pass.

 <dc:subject>E-Portfolio</dc:subject>

This E-Portfolio forms part of one of the subjects I am studying for my Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning/Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at UTS, ironically called "E-Portfolio". It will be continued throughout my life as a way of documenting my education, my career, my travels and my achievements in all areas of my life...at least that's my aim...

I chose to study the Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning/Bachelor of Arts in International Studies because...well to be truthful I didn't have any idea what I wanted to do after I finished school, and the course description sounded interesting as it combined the area of Human Resources with the study of a language and the opportunity for overseas study.

This course has been interesting thus far, and I have had many new experiences and met many new people through it. I am very much looking forward to continuing next year, although I am also looking forward to the end of year break! I am very excited about my year in Germany in 2009 (where I am going for my International Studies year overseas), but I am going to have to brush up on my German skills as I have been put into Level 5 German for next year and the entire class is conducted in German!
