I just finished my eportfolio and I have a very large feeling of accomplishement. I worked hard on this assignment, from knowing nothing about html to being able to design (simple ^_^) pages and link them together. I can read some html and pick out and change information. I know how to create, edit, colour and put other tables inside of tables.

I think that I have developed my problem solving capabiities through this assignment through activities such as finding the best way to link my files together. In addition, editing the fiddly parts of coding through 15 html files and aligning them together has definently increased my patience.

This assignment was a very good experience for me and I learnt so much about how websites are made and structured.

So ... yesterday and the day before, I spent a few hours learning more html. This time, I learnt how to make the sidebar and decoration on the top of the page through an applicaation called 'coffeecup' which I downloaded from the internet for free.

I heard from a friend that I could create tables that would represent the sidebar, etc that I wanted to make. I explored coffeecup and taught myself how to insert, move, put text into, colour the background and remove the visable border of tables. I also learnt to put a table inside of a table.

What I discovered was that html is extreemly fiddly, but not that hard to understand. I spent a long time designing the colour and structure of a page, but then it was really quick to just copy and paste the text from each of the page into the page that I had already done.

At the moment, I am trying to build hyperlinks on the sidebars of each page. The problem is that I have to delete the files from here to update them. When I upload them again, the urls change and my links don't work anymore :( which annoys me because of the work I have to go to to delete, edit and upload 15 files to various locations only to have them not work properly.

Overall though, I am enjoying the experience and challenges. I know that I do not have to upload the files in html format or go to this much effort because e-portfolio is a pass/fail subject but I have wanted to learn some html for a while now and I am glad to have the opportunity, even if it is more work.

I decided that I want to upload my text files in html last week because I thought that the finished product would look more professional that way.

The only problem with that is ... I DON'T KNOW HTML! :( So, last night I engaged in a crash course in basic HTML source coding. Now I can change the background colour of the page as well as the colour and type of font through the coding itself.

What I found annoying was that the colours in .doc are different to the colours in .html format, even though they're the same code or name. For instance, 'light blue' in .html is too light to read, but is perfect in .doc. So I have to play around with the names to get the right colour, which is tedious. However, while it is tedious, I find it easy to understand and work with, so I am going to keep up with it.

I also decided that I want to add a sidebar or an image or something up the top of my pages because if it is all just text, the page looks very crowded and boring. I don't want to tile or stretch an image onto the background because I think it can distract from the text, but if I put an image or links to other pages on a bar on the side or top, then it breaks up the page a bit and makes it more interesting.

Another reason I want to do this is so I can make more effective use of colour. If there are more objects on the page, then I can arrange a better colour scheme and make the pages look better.

So… this is my first blog … ever!!! So now I’m learning how to post to the internet. For anyone reading this, this is supposed to be a log of my learning during the subject e-portfolio, so if that sort of thing interests you, then read on…

So, to begin, today I’ve been teaching myself about the network features of this website. I have to add my lecturer as a friend to my e-portfolio so I had to learn how to do it. The first thing that I noticed was that people had added me to their friends list, so I added them to mine. But even doing that I only had three friends on my list … ☹ and I wanted to add some other people to my list.

I looked around my webpage to try to add other friends but couldn’t find anything about it. So I found the url to elgg and discovered that I could search through tags, which I did. Unfortunately, I came across a problem – what tags do I search for?

People think differently compared to me, therefore their tags will be different to the ones that I would use which means that anything I search for won’t get the results I want.

So what I am going to do is ask my friends what they tagged their pages as, so I can search that and add them. Also, I am going to ask the people who made me their friends how they did it in case I still can’t find my other friends through a tag search.

Basically, so far I have learnt:
- A bit more about how to use the website
- That I still have a lot to learn
- And how to blog
