FINISHED!!

Ok blog, i am officially finished my eportfolio and it is ready for marking... and just in time too!

It is very different from the original information architecture drawing, which Ellen actually said would happen, this is fine as it allowed me to change and adapt to what i wanted to be reflected about myself.

In evaluation, i would have loved to have more colour in my eportfolio, html put a stop to that. Leaving them as word documents were just safer and i would rather it be safe and boring than better but may not work.

I also have included two powerpoint presentations which fingers crossed will also work!

This eportfolio process has taught me a fair bit about computers (even if they dont works sometimes) and i aim to keep it updated so i can use it in the future.

At most times it was a fun process and maybe i am now tempted to set up a my space page. hmmm.

The only thing i am slightly worried about is the fact that it is all public now and i have included rather personal information. I am considering after it is marked to go back and change the files from public to private or logged in users, i appreciate that.

I think that is it, hope you enjoy looking at my eportfolio.

Still working more...

Just a note to say i am almost finished (yay!). I just have a few more things i would like to add.

Have only had one problem over the weekend. I have no idea how to make a html file work! I did it all properly (the exact way we were taught) and loaded it successfully however it wouldnt work, i could have just left it however i didnt want to risk it so i have changed them ALL back to word documents. Im a bit disappointed because html files look so much nicer than boring word documents. However i have quite a few other artefacts so i think thatll make it ok.

Last e-portfolio lesson

Today we had our last e-portfolio lesson. I used it to make sure that i knew how to do everything so when finishing it up i didnt have any surprises. So i feel confident in being able to finish it over the weekend.

We reflected a little on what we learnt and had gained from the subject, most answers involved now being able to use mac computers which it seems most people have had the most trouble with.

Oh and i sorted out how to add Ellen as a friend so thats good.

After class i went on another computer to check what mine looked like from an outsider perspective and a whole folder wasnt there!!! I think, when developing it i may have left it on private when i needed to change it to public. That was rather annoying as all the uploading i had done into that folder (which was the one id done the most work in) wasnt accessible. Therefore i had to log in, delte it and start again because i couldnt find a way to edit it. That task was a little tedious as i was re-doing work i had already completed.

Other than that everything is going fine... ill be back to do some more e-portfolio work on Sunday night so see you then!

Still going...

So tonight i continued uploading documents, i only did a few as we have time in class to work on it. I will use this time to do so and also to check i know everything else (eg make sure i know how to use html).

Also will have to check with Ellen about adding her to our friends list. I did something like that last week but im not sure it worked...?

Also ive had a look at peoples eportfolio from the other class, and theirs look more professional than ours! They are only a little different but still look a little better.

I feel i am on track and wont be rushing to have the eportfolio ready on time.

Will post again tomorrow in class.

Reflection

I just read a post on UTS online that we have until monday afternoon to finish our e-portfolio! That is excellent news for me as my eportfolio is no where near where i want it to be. The information architecture is set out and various artefacts have been uploaded however i need to include some text documents as this will make it more personal and also possibly more attractive (by using html).

I also read on UTS online that we are supposed to be reflecting on our learning throughout the subject, i suppose that bit just slipped my mind so ill reflect a little now...

Being strongly incapable of anything difficut on computers and having a history of giving up as soon as thing get hard computer-wise, i didnt have much hope for this subject to begin with.

Although i can see the advantages of having an eportfolio, it is not someting i would have developed without this subject. I still do not feel 100% certain about placing my detatils on the internet for all to read, i do appreciate the ability to select private if we wish.

I also can see that people who are more computer minded than myself would enjoy setting up this site as they can develop it themselves etc. Even i have enjoyed it a little, once i worked out how to set it out and upload items. The site is rather straight forward and isnt too confusing. However the mac computers in our classroom are rather annoying so i plan to do most of it on my home computer.

So over the next week i will continue to develop my eportfolio to reflect myself.

i will write more entries later (tomorrow if youre lucky)

ROI & Expectations

Here's a link to a thought provoking article on ROI:
It quotes Robert Brinkerhoff who has written extensively on the impact of training from the HRD perspective....
You may recall the impact of the training event figures? Only 7% of impact / transfer of learning occurs as a result of the training (classroom) session!

Here's a link to another useful piece of work on planning & evaluation from Brinkerhoff:

New Communication strategies.....

Here's an article from Chief Learning Officer - New Communication Strategies Offer Old World Results
It may be of interest as we work through our plans for integrating e-Learning into the business!
Here's an excerpt:
"Communication for the modern business is like air for the human body, and learning organizations inside today’s modern businesses have to contend with a variety of challenges. These include communicating across global business lines, evaluating the best delivery methods and creating influential learning activities that meet identified business strategies as well as personal and professional career development objectives for key talent in the workforce. No matter which task CLOs set for themselves and their direct reports, there will be some element of communication required, and the more effective the communication, the higher the potential for learning success.

Dianna Booher, president and CEO, Booher Consultants Inc., has done research on the ins and outs of business communication and has established 10 Cs of communication or strategies to communicate more effectively and purposefully. If you’re having problems, ask yourself if communication in your learning organization is: correct? complete? current? clear? purposefully un-clear? credible? concerned? competent? circular? If not, your work might be harder than it needs to be, and a communication overhaul might be in order."

Not really rocket science - and not really anything new...but there's a couple of clear messages about how you article your plans.

What makes good educational research?

I'm currently attending a 2 day Education Faculty research conference....
There's been some interesting debate drifting around the corridors - what makes good educational research?
hmmmm - research that adds value to the practice of education?
Research that expands the body of knowledge about how people learn?

The afternoon workshop on "Supervision - from both sides" - facilitated by Clive Chappell and Dave Boud - was very thought provoking about the role of the supervisor in research contexts - and the responsbility of the students/candidates...more on that later!

Ongoing e-Portfolios

All the 1st year students should now have completed the set-up of their e-Portfolios. It might be the end of a subject and end of a semester, but it's just the start of the e-Portfolio development.

Over the semester break this ELGG installation will be upgraded - so if you notice the layout/look alters slightly - we've just done an upgrade - that means more goodies!

In the meantime - enjoy working in this space - see you next semester!
